About Us
In 1930 some enthusiastic Petone teenagers formed a cricket club and needed a name to affiliate with the Hutt Valley Association. Empire was chosen because it appeared on the sugar bags used for carrying their gear.
The cricketers were keen to stay together during the winter months and chose table tennis as their winter activity. In 1934 they became affiliated with Hutt Valley Table Tennis and the Empire Table Tennis Club was born. Our first stadium was erected in 1962 on the current stadium site. Major extensions occurred in 1970 and 2008. We have 16 tables permanently set up, can add more if required and our stadium is available for hire. In 2009 we celebrated our 75th Jubilee in a variety of ways. If you are interested in what we did, go to our jubilee page. With over 200 members we are one of the largest table tennis clubs in the country. We are open all year round and are as busy as we have ever been. Our Monday Night Club regularly attracts around 40 members and our Tuesday and Thursday Midweek Clubs both attract 50 plus members each week. Our Friday Night Junior Club is going well too. For more information on sessions, fees and stadium hire, check out our to play page. Our Club has a proud record of competitive success. Over the years our members have won 113 New Zealand Open titles, 83 New Zealand Veterans titles and 37 Hutt Valley/Wellington A Grade titles. We also pride ourselves on being a Club for everybody and cater for all levels of player, including beginners. Our qualified coach conducts free sessions on Monday nights.
